General information, not legal advice. This guide summarises rules we checked on 28 September 2026. Laws and Meta’s policies change, and how they apply depends on your business. Get advice from a lawyer for your situation.

THE STANDARD

What good opt-in looks like.

  • It’s a clear, active choice: an unticked box, a reply or a spoken yes.
  • It names your business and says WhatsApp.
  • It says what they’ll get: offers, updates, reminders.
  • It tells them how to stop.
  • It’s separate from agreeing to your terms or completing a purchase.

Meta requires opt-in that confirms the person wants to receive messages from your business. Laws in most markets add requirements about how and when you can market.

In Australia, the sender must be able to prove consent under the Spam Act. Keep records for as long as you message the person, and for a period afterwards.

IN CONVOHUT

Using consent in ConvoHut.

  1. 01

Add a Consent column to your sheet (for example Yes, date and source), or import contacts with their consent status.

  2. 02

Only include opted-in contacts in marketing campaigns and journeys.

  3. 03

ConvoHut shows each contact’s consent status in the inbox and checks consent requirements per market before launch.

  4. 04

When someone replies STOP, ConvoHut stops their journeys and excludes them from future marketing.

AVOID

Mistakes to avoid.

  • Pre-ticked boxes, or consent hidden in terms and conditions.
  • Treating a purchase as consent to marketing everywhere.
  • Messaging old lists collected for email or SMS without WhatsApp consent.
  • Buying, renting or scraping numbers. Harvested lists are illegal in Australia and Singapore, bought lists almost never carry valid WhatsApp consent, and both break Meta’s policy.
  • Putting promotions in utility messages to avoid consent rules.
